The device (2) has a display for display of a map section (11), and a touch screen is arranged at the display for input of command by contacting the screen or pressing on the screen. An input controller (10) detects the contacting of the screen or pressing on the screen along a curved trajectory. The device is controlled by the input controller, such that the map displayed in the display is adjustable. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a navigation system for a motor vehicle (2) a method of operating an input device.
