PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alternator for a vehicle which can reduce the noise of a fan and further can keep its coolability. SOLUTION: The alternator for a vehicle is equipped with a rotor which rotates integrally with a rotating shaft, a stator which is arranged opposite to the periphery of the rotor, a cooling fan which rotates integrally with the rotating shaft thereby generating cooling air in its roughly radial direction, and a front housing and a rear housing 5 which house the rotor and support the above rotating shaft rotatably and where a plurality of ribs for forming a plurality of cooling air discharge windows are made in their circumferential direction. The circumferential flanks of the plurality of ribs 530 made at the rear housing 5 are inclined in its diametrical direction, and the circumferential widths of the plurality of ribs 530 vary gradually in the rotating direction of the rotor.
