PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of reading out an image of high quality by enabling the removal of infrared components without using an infrared cutting filter in the image reading apparatus using an original illumination lamp including the infrared components, and a method for controlling the image reading apparatus. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus for illuminating an original image by the lamp including the infrared components, receiving reflected light from the original image, photoelectrically converting the reflected light, and outputting image data is provided with: a plurality of visible component image sensors for detecting visible wavelength components including infrared wavelength components from the reflected light of the original image; and an infrared component image sensor for detecting infrared wavelength components from the reflected light of the original image to remove the infrared components detected by the infrared component image sensor from the visible wavelength components including the infrared wavelength components which are detected by the visible component image sensor. Further a feature image formed by the infrared wavelength components included in the original image is extracted by using the infrared wavelength components from the infrared component image sensor.
