PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display technology which can extend service lives of a lamp and a panel, is low in power consumption and is excellent in operability. SOLUTION: In the display technology where a panel part is irradiated with light emitted from an illuminating means, and the light modulated by the panel part is projected on a display part through a projection lens so as to display an image, the apparatus includes a protecting means for protecting the projection lens in a light shielding state, and a detecting means for detecting the light shielding state, and the light quantity of the illuminating means is controlled in accordance with the output of the detecting means.
