PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To propose a compact thermal printer which eliminates the need for a movement space of a thermal head and the need for an installation space of a pressing mechanism at the back side. SOLUTION: The thermal printer 1 has an opening and closing lid unit 3 attached front openably to a front face of a body unit 2. A platen roller 15 is set at an upper end of the opening and closing lid unit 3. The platen roller 15 is pressed by the pressing mechanism 60 set in the opening and closing unit 3 against a head surface 16a of the thermal head 16 mounted at the body unit 2 side. The need for setting the pressing mechanism at the upside as the back side of the thermal head 16 mounted at a front end of the body unit 2 is eliminated, so that the compact thermal printer of a suppressed printer height size is provided.
