<p>Disclosed herein is an improved process for gas-solid phase nitration of organic macromolecules employing oxide of nitrogen (NO<SUB>x</SUB>) in presence of air or its constituents, wherein the process is suitable for the macromolecules having melting point greater than 140°C.</p>
