<p>A platen (90), exemplified in FIG. 7, has a cone-based configuration in which a rear wall (152) provides access, via a hole (98, 100, 104), to a hollow recess (102) defined by the cone. The hole permits both housing of a transfer channel (56) within the hollow recess (102) and relative angled entry of an extruder barrel head and head end of a shooting pot (23, 24) that couple to the transfer channel (56). The platen (90) includes a reinforcing cross-member (160, 164) located above the hole (98, 100, 104), which cross-member produces an outwardly projecting step (163) near a top surface of the platen (90). The projecting step (163) substantially corresponds to a width of the hollow recess (102). The cross member (160) may thicken the rear wall (152) above the hole (100) by providing an inwardly extending flange (166). The platen (90) therefore retains sufficient strength, while accommodating for a lateral mounting displacement of the extruder (26) and shooting pot (23). The platen's configuration results in reduced residence time for melt in both a nozzle adaptor (52) and/or the transfer channel (56), this resulting in the melt experiencing lower exposure to shear forces.</p> |
