POLYMER ACTUATOR

A planar thin polymer actuator comprising a first electrode layer consisting of a conductive active member layer and further a second electrode layer wherein at least a first electrolyte layer in contact with the active member layer is sealed between the electrode layers, so that expansion and shrinkage of the active member layer are effected by application of an electric field between the electrode layers. The first electrolyte layer consists of a solid electrolyte of specified elastic modulus or a liquid electrolyte, and a retention member is disposed for retaining the thickness of an interspace between the active member layer and the second electrode layer.
