PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having a back coating layer showing durability, wear resistance, heat resistance, blocking resistance, and low adhesion, electrical conductivity and friction coefficient with a non-magnetic support. SOLUTION: A coating agent comprises a hyperbranched polymer and a carbon based powder. The magnetic recording medium comprises a magnetic layer and a back coating layer on at least both sides of a substrate layer, wherein the coating agent is applied as a coating for the back coating layer. In the coating agent and the magnetic recording medium, the hyperbranched polymer is preferably formed from a polycondensate of an AB<SB>X</SB>molecule (wherein A and B are organic groups having different functional groups a and b, respectively; functional groups a and b are capable of undergoing chemical condensation and addition reactions with each other; and X is an integer of 2 or larger).
