In the production of a polymer membrane (3) provided with a catalyst layer in regions on at least one side, a homogeneous catalyst is applied to the membrane and removed in places to produce separate catalyst segments (1a, 1b; 2a, 2b). Independent claims are also included the following: (1) proton-conducting polymer membrane with a catalyst layer divided into not less than 2 segments on at least one side, in which the distance between these catalyst segments is less than 0.5 mm; (2) planar micro-fuel cell array containing this membrane or a coated membrane made as described above.
