PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of improving the image quality of an image read from a transparent original by reducing a noise level of radiation noise emitted from a discharge lamp for illuminating the transparent original and affecting an output of a contact image sensor. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus includes: the discharge lamp; a light diffusion section for diffusing light emitted from the discharge lamp in a facially uniform way; the close contact image sensor for reading a transmitted optical image through the transparent original lighted by the light diffusion section; and a conductive shield member arranged between the discharge lamp and the contact image sensor and connected to ground.
