The proposed method for determining the propagation velocity of an electromagnetic wave in ground consists in accomplishing the radar sounding of the subsurface ground layer within the area that contains an object that is contrasting relative to radar radiation, the dimension of which in the direction that coincides with the direction of the movement of the radar antenna is less than the length of the sounding area, determining the geological radar profile of the controlled area, which is shaped as a hyperbola, and determining the propagation velocity by the parameters that characterize the branches of the said hyperbola. The method is distinctive by converting the image of the hyperbolic profile of the area into binary signals that correspond to a set of hyperbolic curves that intersect at a point that is located at the said object, analyzing the distribution of the signal amplitudes along a straight line that is perpendicular to the direction of the electromagnetic wave, and determining the propagation velocity of the electromagnetic wave by using an iterative calculation procedure.
