<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a color image forming apparatus of a tandem type to minimize a decrease in productivity by shortening time needed to form toner marks used for correcting color shift, density, etc. <P>SOLUTION: A line of marks is formed on a belt such that the areas of formation of mark images in corresponding colors are assigned to K, Y, C and M in that order (K is the first and M is the last in a writing enable period), which is the reverse of the order of the colors M, C, Y and K of image forming sections disposed in the direction of conveyance of the belt. Even when the writing enable period for C, M and Y has not finished when writing of an M mark used to form the mark image at the latest timing has just finished, the signal is made non-active and a mark formation process is ended. A required time of "4a+3b" has been conventionally needed because K is assigned to the last of the enable period.
