PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a timing controller and an image display device for recognizing the resolution of a display panel, using a simple constitution. SOLUTION: Image signal line driving devices 101 to 108 have a plurality of cascade-connected driving circuits integrated. These image signal line driving devices 101 to 108 are also cascaded-connected. The timing controller 10 transmits the horizontal start pulse STH to the image signal line driving device 101 and receives a horizontal start pulse STH<SB>B</SB>, which returns after making a round of the driving circuits included in the image signal line driving devices 101 to 108 and determines the number of horizontal resolution (number of pixels) of the liquid crystal panel 301, based on the interval from the transmission to the reception.
