A retractable bollard has a largely circular, cylindrical upper part (1) and optical signal devices around its periphery. The optical signal devices are formed by LEDs and these are obliquely set into a top, rounded edge zone (4) of the upper part of the bollard (1), so that an asymmetrical light radiation (5) is provided obliquely to the external environment, and which provides a sufficient signal output in the retracted and operating state of the bollard for pedestrians and vehicle drivers. An independent claim is included for a method for operating a retractable bollard.
