Disclosed is a therapeutic and/or prophylactic agent which exerts a significant efficacy on a disease associated with HTLV-1 such as adult T-cell leukemia (ATL)/lymphoma. A therapeutic and/or prophylactic agent for adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma or a therapeutic and/or prophylactic agent for an HTLV-1-related disease, AIDS or a disease induced by the infection with a virus such as an EB virus, the agent comprising galectin-9, a variant thereof or a galectin-9 inducing factor as an active ingredient; and a technique for the treatment and/or prevention of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma or a technique for the treatment and/or prevention of an HTLV-1-related disease, AIDS or a disease induced by the infection with a virus such as an EB virus, the technique comprising introducing a gene for galectin-9, a variant thereof or a galectin-9 inducing factor.
