PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal medium for TN display having a flat frequency dependency of dielectric constant as possible at low temperature. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal medium manifests 200 kHz of dielectric relaxation frequency at 0°C and has small frequency dependence of the dielectric anisotropy and a nematic phase with positive dielectric anisotropy. The liquid crystal medium is used in active matrix display device. The invention relates to the active matrix display element comprising the medium. The liquid crystal medium is selected from a group of compounds having a specific structure with a phenyl ring and a cyclohexane ring comprising materials comprising at least one kind of strongly polar two nucleus.
