PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel and compact cylinder exhibiting high driving force transmission efficiency while having the advantage of an electric cylinder, i.e. high controllability. SOLUTION: The linear motor cylinder includes a hollow tubular member 10, and a cylinder rod 30 arranged reciprocatively for the tubular member 10. The cylinder rod 30 becomes a field flux generation source when it is provided with a plurality of permanent magnets 32 in the rod, and further provided with a spline groove 34 in the outer circumferential surface of the rod. The tubular member 10 comprises a stator coil 12 generating a magnetic field causing reciprocal linear motion of the cylinder rod 30 at a position corresponding to the plurality of permanent magnets 32, and a spline outer tube 14 for guiding reciprocal linear motion of the cylinder rod 30 at a position corresponding to the spline groove 34.
