FLAME-RESISTANT FIBER, CARBON FIBER, AND PROCESSES FOR THE PRODUCTION OF BOTH

A flame-resistant fiber assembly obtained by forming a flame-resistant polymer into yarn, which assembly is enhanced in performance by improving the yarn-making properties; high-performance carbon fiber obtained by carbonization of the assembly; a process for the production of a flame-resistant fiber which comprises spinning a solution of an amine-modified flame-resistant polymer in a spinning bath by a wet or dry-wet method in such a way that the solidified yarn at the outlet of the bath exhibits a degree of swelling of 100 to 1000% by weight, subjecting the yarn to stretching and/or water washing in a bath, and drying the yarn under tension, wherein the temperatures of the stretching bath and/or water washing bath, drying temperature and tension are so controlled as not to cause the fiber to crystallize; and a process for the production of carbon fiber by carbonizing the flame-resistant fiber.
