<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) which has ester groups in its molecular units, can extend its application range as a polymer, is thermally stable, and has arbitrarily controllable physical properties; and a process for preparing the same. <P>SOLUTION: The PHA copolymer contains 3-hydroxyalkanoic acid units having a terminal ester structure represented by formula (1) and units represented by formula (2). The preparation process comprises the biosynthesis, by microorganisms, using a dicarboxylic monoester compound represented by formula (15) and a compound represented by formula (16) as the raw materials under the conditions containing both the compounds represented by formulas (15) and (16). In the formulas, n, m, p, and q are each an integer selected from the range shown in the formulas; R is one selected from residues shown in the formulas; and R' contains a residue having a structure selected from a phenyl structure, a thienyl structure, and a cyclohexyl structure provided that each R' may have a residue different from that in other units or a structure derived from other monomers. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
