Autoconfiguration in an ATM network

The method involves sending a dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) request by a leaf node to dynamic host configuration protocol server by using asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) connection information. A dynamic host configuration protocol response transferred from the server to the leaf node is received by the leaf node, where the response contains information about the other ATM connection information. The latter information is utilized for sending messages. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a leaf node of an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network for receiving dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) request to a DHCP server (2) a DHCP server of an ATM network for receiving DHCP responses transferred from the leaf node to the DHCP server.
