<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively remove particulate matters generated in a direct cylinder injection type gasoline engine. <P>SOLUTION: A gasoline internal combustion engine is capable of performing stratified lean running and uniform stoichiometric running according to running conditions, and when it is determined that the oxidation capacity of particulate matters is low while performing the stratified lean running, the stratified lean running is switched to the uniform stoichiometric running, and an operational mode is returned to the stratified lean running on the condition that the temperature of an exhaust emission control device reaches a predetermined value.
