FIELD: sealing or packing boreholes or wells, particularly preventers adapted to seal heads of oil and gas well drilled from ground surface or under water. ^ SUBSTANCE: seal comprises a set including inner semi-ring arranged in preventer ram body and removable outer semi-rings with reinforced ends and supports. Removable outer semi-rings may be substituted for new ones having greater heights. The new outer semi-rings differ from each other for value equal to sealable axial gap between preventer and ram bodies. Sealing surface of outer removable semi-rings, which projects over ram body surface, is curvilinear, includes radial part in cross-section and provides seal volume compensation in the case of seal compression. Method involves measuring axial gap between preventer and ram bodies; determining new outer semi-ring type from axial gap value; removing worn-out outer semi-ring from ram body and installing new one. Each new outer semi-ring has height exceeding that of previous one and above height difference is equal to the axial gap value. Each new semi-ring has sealing surface projecting over curvilinear ram body surface having radial part in cross-section thereof. ^ EFFECT: increased operational reliability. ^ 2 cl, 5 dwg |
