A system and a method for authenticating a portable terminal through a direct coupling between an AC(Authentication Center) and an MSC(Mobile Switching Center) are provided to shorten an authentication processing time and reduce an HLR(Home Location Register) investment cost by reducing a load of the HLR. A system for authenticating a portable terminal through a direct coupling between an AC and a mobile switching center includes a BTS(Base Transceiver Station)/BSC(Base Station Controller)(20), a MSC/VLR(Visitor Location Register)(30), an HLR(40), an AC(50), and an MS(Mobile Station)(10). The MSC/VLR(30) is connected to the AC(50) so that an authentication message transmitted from the MSC/VLR(30) is transmitted to the AC directly. The MSC/VLR(30) is connected to the AC(50) so that the authentication message transmitted form the AC(50) is transmitted to the MSC/VLR(30) via the HLR(40). The authentication messages transmitted from the MSC/VLR(30) are authentication request, authentication status report, authentication failure report, and base station challenge messages.
