<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To certainly prevent collision of cars each other in a circulation type multi-car elevator. <P>SOLUTION: In the multi-car elevator 300, a plurality of cars 3A-3D are circulated/moved in hoistways 1A, 1B. Approaching markers 19, 20 are mounted to a drive rope 4 at a position left from the car with a predetermined distance. Before the cars collide to each other, the approaching markers and a rope fastening unit 5 are brought into contacted with each other to shut off a power source of a drive motor.
