Synthetic rubber, such as neoprene, that known under the Registered Trade Mark "Thiokol" and the diolefine types and their copolymers, or rubber scrap containing natural and synthetic rubber is reclaimed by subjecting it to moist heat and preferably pressure in the presence of an aliphatic or aromatic amine in which any substituted groups are organic but not alcoholic, such as primary, secondary or tertiary butyl amine, lauryl amine or a -naphthylamine. The amine may be dissolved in a solvent capable of swelling the rubber and the solvent may be evaporated after mixing with the rubber. In examples, (1) a mixture of natural and synthetic rubber scrap is ground, mixed with a solution of lauryl amine in naphtha and treated in a potheater for 5 hours at 190 lbs. live steam pressure, (2) ground neoprene G.N. tyre scrap is mixed with a solution of lauryl amine in trichlorethylene and heated with water in an autoclave for 5 hours at 200 lbs. pressure. Neoprene, after treatment, is compatible with other synthetic or natural rubber and is vulcanizable with sulphur. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 561,584.
|
