PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a camera for photographing an object, without applying the stresses due to environmental changes in the object, in underwater photographing with various restrictions on photographic conditions. SOLUTION: The output of a photographed image from a CCD is monitored S2, and that the second release of a release switch SW is turned on S3 is decided. When the second release is turned on, it is decided whether or not the object is an underwater mammal, such as dolphin and whale that are sensitive to the environmental changes, such as strobe light emission, from stored decision database S4. The inhibition of the strobe light emission is decided according to the object S5. When the object is not the dolphin, the whale or the like, photographing with the strobe light emission (strobe photography) is performed S6. When the object is the dolphin, the whale or the like, the strobe light emission is inhibited. Then, it is decided whether the movement of the object is fast S7 and the object is photographed with automatic exposure S8 or photographed by compensating underexposure by sensitized photography S9.
