PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color projector that is advantageous for miniaturization, highly reliable, and can easily cope with problems of color reproducibility and color separation according to the types of projection images. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal element 3 is arranged as a spectral means for extracting three primary color light rays, namely, red, green and blue from emission light L1 of a light source 1. A polarization conversion element 2 is disposed on the light incident side of the liquid crystal element 3. A DMD 5 serving as an optical modulation means for modulating the three primary color light rays separated and extracted by the liquid crystal element 3 according to input video signals and turning the light rays into image signal light rays is disposed, on-signal light emitted from the DMD 5 is projected onto a screen 7 via the projection optical system 6, off-signal light is reflected in directions other than the direction of the projection optical system 6, and thus, a high contrast, clear digital projection video can be obtained.
