PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydroxycitric acid derivative or a salt thereof useful as an active ingredient of an external preparation for the skin and a cosmetic; to provide a method for producing the hydroxycitric acid derivatives; and to provide the external preparation for the skin and the cosmetic containing the hydroxycitric acid derivatives. SOLUTION: The specific hydroxycitric acid derivative in which at least one of the hydroxy groups of the hydroxycitric acid, or at least one of the hydroxy groups and at least one of carboxy groups of the hydroxycitric acid are modified by a coupling scheme degradable by a biological enzyme reaction, or the salt thereof is produced, and formulated with the external preparation for the skin, and the cosmetic.
