PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a user-friendly image recorder in which information of a sheet such as a recording sheet is read out accurately, and a recording mode is determined automatically by the type or the properties of a sheet. SOLUTION: The image recorder in which a member to become the reference of output from a sheet type detection means is installed in a position other than a sheet mounting section, is provided with an optical output characteristics acquiring means 20 constituted of a light source, a light receiving element and the like, so that optical output characteristics of an optical output characteristics reference member 25 are acquired.
