<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology which can make the layout of a translated sentence identical to that of an original sentence when a document generated with a certain language is translated with a different language. <P>SOLUTION: A translation device 1 determines, for each unit area which constitutes an original sentence, whether a translated sentence corresponding to an original sentence arranged in a unit area can be arranged with the same layout as the original sentence in the unit area. When the result of the determination is that the translated sentence cannot be arranged with the same layout as the original sentence in the unit area, the translation device extracts words and phrases, which satisfy preliminarily determined conditions, from the translated sentence as the abbreviation-object words and phrases, and then determines abbreviation words obtained by abbreviating part of a character string constituting the abbreviation-object words and phrases. Then, the translation device generates a translated sentence in which the abbreviation-object words and phrases are converted to abbreviation words, generates the image of the translated sentence with the same layout as the original sentence, and generates images representing the definitions of the abbreviation words. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
