PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for suppressing or preventing the propagation of cracks in the welded joint portion of a welded joint structure. SOLUTION: The method for suppressing the propagation of cracks of the welded joint structure configured by joining a skin 11 overlapped on the flange portion 13a of a stringer 13 by welding comprises a welding step for forming a friction stir welding portion 14 by welding the skin and the flange portion 13a by the friction stir welding method, and a compressive residual stress application step for applying a compressive residual stress for producing a plastic strain up to the back surface side of the joined portion penetrating the friction stir welding portion 14 by applying the compressive residual stress to the friction stir welding portion 14.
