<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data recording device and a data reproducing device capable of displaying character information related to data (files) and of easily searching the character information for the data in a short time, if the character information contains a large number of characters and is required to be displayed entirely when the data (files) and the character information related to the data are recorded in a recording medium and reproduced in association with each other. <P>SOLUTION: The data recording and reproducing device 1 comprises a writing means 8 for pairing a short file name serving as short character information and a long file name serving as long characteristic information and for writing the names in association in a file (data); a DSP 5 serving as a reading means; and a control means 6.
