The method comprises the following steps: impregnation of the piece with a liquid impregnation composition containing at least one phosphate compound over at least a part of the external surface of the piece, application to said external part of the surface of the piece of a coating composition containing a colloidal solution of at least one refractory oxide in water, at least one borosilicate compound in the form of a powder with coating properties and at least one metallic boride in a powder form, followed by thermal treatment after application of the coating composition.
