The combined instrument (1) has freely programmable color displays (3,4,5) for graphically showing driver-relevant information. A selector device is used for changing the graphical display of the driver-related information on the color displays in at least two different display modes. The graphical display is adjusted by changing its brightness, color and contrast, or by performing animation in different modes. The combined instrument can be set in start mode which is used with the start-up of a motor vehicle.
