<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an article confirmation system capable of discriminating illegal communication data transmitted from a third person. <P>SOLUTION: A card reader/writer 12 acquires feature information indicating the feature of a card 18, reads out the number of times of authentication in which the authenticity of the card 18 is authenticated, which is previously stored in an attached storage part, and transmits identification value information obtained by adding a prescribed value to the number of times of authentication and the feature information to a server 14. The server 14 stores the number of times of authentication in which the authenticity of the card 18 is authenticated in a storage apparatus 62, and when the identification value information and the feature information are received from a network 16, compares the identification value indicated by the received identification value information with a value obtained by adding a prescribed value to the number of times of authentication which is stored in the storage part 62, and when both the values coincide with each other, checks authenticity on the basis of the feature information. When the authenticity of the card 18 is confirmed, the server 14 updates the number of times of authentication stored in the storage apparatus 62 and transmits the authentication result to the card 18.
