EXTERNAL ELECTRODE TYPE FLUORESCENT LAMP AND BACK LIGHT UNIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external electrode type fluorescent lamp with good dark starting characteristics, and also to provide a back light unit at low cost. SOLUTION: This external electrode type fluorescent lamp 1 is provided with: a tubular glass bulb 2; a pair of external electrodes 3a, 3b arranged on both end side outer periphery surface of the glass bulb 2; and a phosphor layer 5 formed in an inner surface of the glass bulb 2. The phosphor layer 5 contains phosphor particles having electron emission atoms. At least an end-edge side of the phosphor layer 5 closer to one end of the glass bulb end approach is extended from an end edge equivalent position B on a tube central part side of the external electrode 3a to a position entering 1-7 mm to the tube end part side.
