PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piston ring holding structure for an internal combustion engine, capable of suitably maintaining sealing performance of a piston ring portion without increasing the number of components. SOLUTION: In an upper face 14a of a piston ring 14, a recessed portion 14c is formed for storing a coil expander 17. In the recessed portion 14c, an inclined face 14e is provided as a working face for dispersing the thrust of the coil expander 17 to the side of an lower side inner wall face 11a of a ring groove 11 and to the side of a cylinder inner wall face 20a. The coil expander 17 is arranged in the recessed portion 14c for imparting thrust (energizing force) of itself to the inclined face 14e of the recessed portion 14c to thrust a lower face 14b of the piston ring 14 against the lower side inner wall face 11a in the ring groove 11 and thrust an outer peripheral face 14f of the piston ring 14 against the cylinder inner wall face 20a.
