PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide alloy steel powder for powder metallurgy whose facial pressure fatigue strength can be increased even in relatively low temperature sintering while highly maintaining the density of a sintered compact (i.e., the compressibility of the alloy steel powder). SOLUTION: The alloy steel powder 4 for powder metallurgy is obtained by sticking powder 2 comprising an alloy element(s) Y to the surface of iron based powder 1 comprising an alloy element(s) X as prealloy. The concentration of the alloy element(s) X in the central part of the iron based powder satisfies a prescribed concentration range, also, a high concentration phase in which the concentration of the alloy element(s) Y is a prescribed one or above is present in the surface layer part of the iron based powder, and also, the alloy element(s) X and the alloy element(s) Y are one or more selected from Al, Si, P, Ti, V, Cr, Zn, Sn and W.
