PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect data on a disk surface of one head before failure of the head in a disk storage device having a plurality of disk surfaces and a plurality of heads. SOLUTION: Each head is provided with a table (4B) for accumulating the number of error occurrences caused by the operation of a head (25) and a control unit (30) for predicting failure of one head from the accumulated number of error occurrences, reading data of a corresponding disk surface by the head whose failure is predicted and writing the read data on the other corresponding disk plane by the other head.
