PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photosensitive composition that gives volume holograms, having high refractive index modulation and superior heat resistance, and to provide a method for manufacturing a volume hologram that uses the composition. SOLUTION: The photosensitive composition for a volume hologram recording is used to record interference fringes produced by interference of laser light or light with superior coherency, as fringes having a different refractive index. The composition contains (a) a cation polymerizable compound which is a liquid at normal temperature, (b) a radical polymerizable compound, (c) a photo-radical polymerization initiator which reacts with the above laser light or the light with superior coherency to polymerize the component (b), and (d) a cation polymerization initiator having heat-latency.
