PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for determining a carbon source on benzene based on a measurement value on the stabilized carbon isotope ratio (<SP>13</SP>C/<SP>12</SP>C) of the benzene in the atmosphere. SOLUTION: The stabilized carbon isotope ratio (<SP>13</SP>C/<SP>12</SP>C) of benzene contained in air taken in a prescribed area is measured to calculate aδ<SP>13</SP>C value (permillage deviation of the ratio of a carbon isotope in a specimen from the ratio of a carbon isotope in an international standard substance) from a measurement result thereof. The benzene is determined to be a benzene whose carbon source is coal if theδ<SP>13</SP>C value ranges between -23 to -26 per mill while the benzene is determined to be a benzene whose carbon source is petroleum if theδ<SP>13</SP>C value ranges between -27 to -29 per mill. In addition, the calculated value ofδ<SP>13</SP>C is a value with the effect of benzene-containing general atmosphere excluded therefrom. Fig. 1 is an example of an analyzer.
