PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a red phosphor having excellent color purity and luminance, to provide a method for producing the red phosphor, and to provide an EL element containing the red phosphor. SOLUTION: This red phosphor is characterized by containing a sulfur compound represented by a composition formula 1: Sr1-xBaxS in a matrix, containing Eu as a light-emitting center in the matrix, and further containing a compound represented by a composition formula 2: Sr1-xBaxSO4.
