<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electron emission type backlight unit, to provide a flat panel display device having it, and to provide its driving method. <P>SOLUTION: This electron emission type backlight unit is provided with: a front substrate and a rear substrate arranged oppositely to each other by being separated from each other; an anode electrode and a phosphor layer arranged between the front substrate and the rear substrate; a first electrode and a second electrode arranged between the front substrate and the rear substrate by being separated from each other; and an electron emission layer arranged so as to cover at least one surface out of surfaces, of the first electrode and the second electrode, facing to each other.
