PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a driving method for a plasma display panel and the plasma display panel, with which discharge efficiency is improved by reducing energy loss due to ion acceleration during sustained discharge. SOLUTION: The energy loss due to ion acceleration in a cathode sheath caused near a cathode can be reduced, by lowering the potential of a display electrode in synchronism in a sustain discharge period, and the discharge efficiency can be improved, even if the drive voltage is raised to increase the xenon excitation energy, so that vacuum ultraviolet rays can be emitted efficiently.
