Apparatus for applying a back-strip combined with head bands, and a backing gauze if necessary, to the spine of a book while the book is in motion along a horizontal path, comprises a vertically-reciprocating carrier 25 which is raised by magnetically-actuated means when a book 2 engages an electric contact, a further carrier 24 which is reciprocated horizontally and is supported by the vertical carrier, means for feeding the combined back-strip and headbands over the carrier 24 and cutting off a suitable length, and a guide plate 30 on the carrier 24 which engages behind the trailing edge of the book as the carrier 24 rises and then moves with the book to press the back-strip and head bands on the spine of the book. As shown in Fig. 1, each book 2 is supported by clamps on a pair of opposed endless chains 3. The spines are glued at station 5, and the head-bands &c. are applied at station 6, and pressed at station 7. The combined back-strip and head bands 18, Fig. 3, is fed by rollers 14, 15 beneath a cutter 10 and over a rubber &c. surface 23 on the carrier 24 until it abuts an adjustable stop 22, and a length is then cut off by the cutter 10. If a backing gauze is to be applied which is wider than the thickness of the book, the whole arrangement at station 6 can be moved transversely along rails 36, Fig. 1, so that the plane of reference 19, Fig. 3, of the cutter 10 is displaced from the edge of the book. A motor 8, operated when a book closes a switch, drives the feed rollers 14, 15 and the cutter 10 through a one-revolution pin-clutch 9. The carrier 25 is raised vertically by links 32 operated by a magnet 31, and the carrier 24 is moved horizontally on the carrier 25 by a spring when the tapered part of a lug 26, Fig. 3, secured to the carrier 24 is raised to a position opposite a fixed guide roller. The carrier 24 could be moved horizontally by cams, or pneumatic or hydraulic means.
