<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently adsorb evaporated HC during stop of an internal combustion engine. <P>SOLUTION: An intake passage 26 is connected to an intake port 20 of each cylinder 4. A wall surface 27 of the intake passage 26 is used also as a wall surface of a surge tank 28. An opening 27A is formed in the wall surface 27. A shut-off valve 30 is disposed in the opening 27A for making a length of the intake passage variable. Adsorption material 31 is provided on both sides of the shut-off valve 30 for adsorbing HC.
