PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize a hydraulic damper, to stabilize damping characteristics, to reduce a weight, to simplify a structure and to reduce costs. SOLUTION: A piston connected with a piston rod projecting to the outside of a cylinder, is slidably mounted in the cylinder to define a liquid chamber at a piston rod side and a liquid chamber at an anti-piston rod side, both chambers are communicated through a damping force generating means, further a sub-rod having a pressure receiving area same as that of a piston rod and projecting to the outside is slidably mounted in the liquid chamber at the anti-piston rod side, the sub-rod and the piston have a prescribed clearance therebetween, and connected with a spring extending to more than a free length, and the cylinder is filled with hydraulic fluid.
