The method involves switching a universal mobile telecommunication system on a global system for mobile communication (GSM) network, if the connection to a universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS) is not established. A jamming transmitter preventing the establishment of connection of the telephone to a non-GSM network, is operated in the receiving region of the telephone. The switched mobile telephone is identified in the GSM-network and the corresponding telephone is tapped if necessary. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an apparatus for identifying and tapping a mobile telephone operated in a dual-mode (2) a jamming transmitter for identifying and tapping a mobile telephone operated in a dual mode.
