A display device and a driving method thereof are provided to reduce the thickness of a display device element by reducing the number of MOS(Metal Oxide Semiconductor) transistors in a current generator. A display device includes a controller(302) and a data driver. The controller provides (N+M)-bit second display data according to N-bit first display data, where N and M are positive numbers. The data driver generates a current corresponding to the second display data by using a reference current. The reference current is selected from plural reference currents according to the second display data, which is provided from the controller. The data driver includes a reference current unit(404), a mode selector(406), and a current generator(408). The reference current unit generates the reference currents. The mode selector selects one of the reference currents according to the second display data. The current generator generates the current corresponding to the second display data by using the reference current as a bias current.
